A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Gabriola Medical Clinic

Gabriola Medical Clinic began in 1994. In 2012, we moved into a beautiful, modern, community-built building — the Gabriola Community Health Centre.

The doctors and staff aim to offer the best possible medical care to people on Gabriola Island. We believe the relationship between doctors, patients, and staff to be a partnership, working best when based on mutual trust and respect. We aim to follow this compact, published by the BC General Practice Services Committee, and we encourage you to, too.

We try to provide the best possible care to people who may find it harder to access healthcare services, including people with severe mental health problems, learning difficulties, drug problems, homeless people, those with limited English.

You can find out more about the clinic by checking out our Clinic Achievements page where you’ll find relevant articles and videos relating to the clinic.

We will not tolerate abusive or offensive language or behaviour.

We gratefully acknowledge the Gabriola Health Care Foundation, which owns the Health Centre and generously supported the development of this website.

With the departure of Dr. Shadmani at the end of April and Dr. Mierzewski at the end of June, many Gabriola residents will be joining the almost one million British Columbians that do not have a family doctor. By June 2022 Gabriola will only have two doctors and one Nurse Practitioner to manage the medical care of a community of 4500, many of whom are elderly or have complex medical or mental health conditions.

BC’s family doctors play a critical role in early identification of disease, improved management of chronic illness, and helping people stay well. Evidence shows that a higher supply of family physicians is correlated with better health outcomes. Fewer family doctors are choosing to work in comprehensive, longitudinal family practice and more family doctors than ever before are considering leaving family practice. There are an increasing number of family doctors moving from primary care to other areas within health care. While these doctors are providing important services – such as urgent care, hospital work and speciality areas – their absence from community-based practices make it harder than ever to find family doctors to work in rural communities.

The Gabriola physicians, the Health Care Foundation and the Gabriola Chapter of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice have begun recruiting for new physicians. A long-term campaign is under development by the Health care Foundation.

As a first success we have secured two long term locums. Dr. Harry Nielsen and Dr. Aoife Green will be joining the practice in May and August 2022 and will stay until August 2023. Any patient orphaned by Dr. Mierzewski and Dr. Shadmani will be provided interim medical care by these two physicians. This is great news for our community, and we are grateful for the help.

Until our new locums start work the clinic will do our best to continue to help those waiting for care, and we appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate this new era of primary care crisis.

Comment on Facebook With the departure ...

We appreciate the update and the hard work you do to keep our community healthy.

Wonderful news! We are so fortunate to have the physicians, clinic staff and the Health Care Foundation working to find viable solutions to this very real crisis.

Thank you for the update and all your hard work on our behalf.

Wow! We are soooo lucky to have such caring staff in our Medical Clinic during this frustrating time for all.

Great news. Thank you for your hard work in securing locums.

Great news, Thankyou!!

Thank You at our medical clinic for all of your incredible work in searching and finding medical care for all of us here on Gabriola. This is certainly a crisis for us in Canada. Our governments, Provincialy and Federally, are the only hope for enticing our medical system to find a viable option for medical practitioners wanting to enter and make a decent living giving their help. We all need dependable health care! This falls just below clean water and it is that IMPORTANT! Thank You so very much to our new locums and I hope that we have provided a good place for you to live in and not be overloaded and want to leave. We all must make their stay here the best that we can provide.

Way to go Gabriola, providing excellent care, running a business and actively recruiting GP’s. So many could learn from your example.

Thank you so much for all your hard work and care. Fantastic news on securing two long term locums!

Thank you so much for the work you are doing to secure doctors for our island.

Great news! Thank you for working so hard on our behalf!

The lack of Dr's and Health Care workers in BC has become a major problem. We used to be the flagship of medical care in Canada , now we are at the bottom of the list. It's sad and very concerning for all .

Fantastic news thank you for all your care and work.

Thank you for all your hard work. Everyone appreciates it.

That is really great news.🌹
