A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Gabriola Medical Clinic

Gabriola Medical Clinic began in 1994. In 2012, we moved into a beautiful, modern, community-built building — the Gabriola Community Health Centre.

The doctors and staff aim to offer the best possible medical care to people on Gabriola Island. We believe the relationship between doctors, patients, and staff to be a partnership, working best when based on mutual trust and respect. We aim to follow this compact, published by the BC General Practice Services Committee, and we encourage you to, too.

We try to provide the best possible care to people who may find it harder to access healthcare services, including people with severe mental health problems, learning difficulties, drug problems, homeless people, those with limited English.

You can find out more about the clinic by checking out our Clinic Achievements page where you’ll find relevant articles and videos relating to the clinic.

We will not tolerate abusive or offensive language or behaviour.

We gratefully acknowledge the Gabriola Health Care Foundation, which owns the Health Centre and generously supported the development of this website.

The Gabriola Island COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for *ALL* adults is on from May 17-20 at the Community Hall. There was a very rotten glitch that made it hard for many of you to book - the system was not recognizing Gabriola as a location. VIHA assures us that this has been fixed and we really hope it did not make anyone give up in frustration. We need to get shots in everyone's arms - and with this clinic we can make that happen by the end of the day on May 20!

You can register at gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated or call 1-833-838-2323. If you have already booked a shot in Nanaimo and want to change to the clinic on Gabriola please call to rebook. If you experience any difficulties tell the agent your postal code and ask to rebook into the "Whole Community Clinic at the Gabriola Community Hall". You can also keep your appointment in town if that works better for you.

We have also been told by the Ministry of Health that the clinic is no longer able to provide TAP forms for travel to Nanaimo for vaccine - if you already have one for a future appointment it may not be honoured. This was not a decision that was made locally so please be understanding.

Our island gets safer with every single jab in the arm of a Gabriolan. Do it for your health and for your community! 🙏❤️

Comment on Facebook The Gabriola Island ...

This is awesome news. Does the clinic need volunteers or drivers? I am getting my 1st shot today in Nanaimo

Shannon more fyi.

Thank you.

The TAP is for valid medical reasons...and your medical info is private. So how would Min. of Health/ BC Ferries know why you are traveling to Nanaimo? Especially if so many people had trouble booking for the Gabriola clinic...I realize that the Gabriola Medical Clinic can do nothing about this, but I just thought I'd put that out there.

Well it has finally happened! Island Health has scheduled COVID-19 vaccine clinics on Gabriola Island starting May 17! 🙏

Go to gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated to register. Now - do it now!!!

At this point in the vaccine rollout about 20% of Gabriola has been vaccinated. We need to get 70-80% of our population vaccinated to reach a safer level of immunity. That should not be difficult - we all know how much Gabriola loves to reach a community goal!

If you are unable to book online you may book by phone by calling 1-833-838-2323.

If you previously booked into a clinic in Nanaimo and want to change your appointment to the Gabriola clinic you can also call to rebook.

Get yourself registered for your vaccination and then encourage those around you to do the same. We have all been in this together for over a year - and we will only get out of it if we all contribute to this common goal. ❤

Thank you. For those of us who can take earlier appointments in Nanaimo, are TAP forms available?

Thank you.

I am still unable to book online (info not recognized for some reason) nor by phone today, 17th. Gabriola not showing up on their menu.

⭐️ UPDATE: Gabriola Vaccine Clinic - 15 slots still available ⭐️

Island Health has been adding capacity all week to keep up with demand. More than 300 appointments are already scheduled and there are still 15 time slots left for residents >80 years old and Indigenous residents >65 years. If you or your loved one have not booked yet please call for an appointment.

It is going to be a very busy clinic. There will be community volunteers directing traffic and moving people through the parking lot, registration and post vaccine waiting period. As fun as it will be to see everyone remember this is not a social time, we must stay on schedule and stay distanced.

Parking at the Community Hall will be limited. The good news is that GERTIE 🚐 will be on hand to shuttle people between a second parking site at the Southend Firehall and the Community Hall as needed.

Well done to Island Health, PHC, GERTIE, The Community Hall, Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department, Gabriola Lions Club and other community volunteers for quickly organizing this amazing and hopeful event. 🙏❤

Island Health will be on Gabriola the week of March 22 to start vaccinating residents over 80 years old and Indigenous residents over 65 years old. 💉 🙏

If you are one of these valued folks from Gabriola, Mudge or DeCourcy please call the VIHA appointment line to register for your vaccine.

❤❤ 1-833-348-4787 ❤❤ 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily

This is a true community effort with organizations across the island working together, and with Island Health, to make this a wonderful and easy experience for our community. PHC wants to help make sure everyone can get to their vaccine appointment. If do not have a ride contact PHC at 250-247-7311 to speak to the staff. GERTIE will also be working to ensure transportation.

There are approximately 300 Gabriolans that will qualify for immunization the week of March 22. It is wonderful to know they will be protected. The remainder of the adult community will be offered on-island vaccine in the coming weeks. Stayed Tuned!

Thanks for checking on people to make sure we are aware of the clinics. ❤️

It will be a big relief to know that our seniors are protected. Thank you for pulling together to make this safe and local for our older Gabriolan residents.💗

Gabriola Medical Clinic, do we know yet if everyone will need to call for appointments for the more general clinic for 18-65? I'm daydreaming about ways to make the process easier.

Ok.....on phone for 90 minutes. Only to find out there is no registration for Gabriola.

We were able to register this morning with no hassle. The person Len spoke to said she was getting a lot of Gabriolans. So ....23 @ 1:15 Community Hall. 😌

An 86 year old friend of mine called this afternoon and they said that they just got the info for Gabriola and she has an appointment for March 23rd at the Community hall.

Tried again tonight and booked Mom's appt. on Gabe Yayyyyyyyy

An 81 year old friend of mine now has an appointment for the 23rd. So the clinic at the Community Hall is for people 80+.

Yeah...I saw that. Stephen's mom works at booking vaccines. And she says they were told that the clinic is only going to be on Gabriola a couple of days and they have Gabriola as one of the list of whole communities. The guy Bob talked to (the second time) got the memo. The first woman he got through to did not. Elhe is booked as well as Fran and Steve.

Wonderful!!

Such a welcome relief ! Nearly normal is coming 💕

OMG OMG OMG BEST NEWS EVER!!!

Wonderful!

Be sure to check some of our accomplishments on our Clinic Achievements page.

The Building

The clinic is grateful to occupy a wonderful building that was built by the community on Gabriola and is operated by the Gabriola Health Care Foundation. The story of how this clinic was built is remarkable. For more information, and for videos telling the clinic’s story, see the Foundation’s website.

Travel Assistance Forms

Travel assistance forms are available for eligible BC residents who need to travel within the province for non-emergency medical specialist services not available within their own community. Please call ahead with the name of the specialist or service and we can have the form ready for you quickly.

For information regarding medical assured loading, please see the BC Ferries news release.

Fees and Charges

The Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP) covers most necessary medical services for BC residents. Please refer to our Fee Schedule here for complete details.

Recruitment

We’re looking for a fourth doctor to join us. For more information, see here, or call (250) 247-9922 to speak to Dr. Maciej Mierzewski or any of the doctors. We’d be delighted to tell you more.

We believe there are around 800 patients on Gabriola who are not registered with a GP. We are very concerned about this and are actively trying to recruit a fourth permanent doctor. Our aim is that everyone on the island who wants a GP at our clinic can have one.

During the pandemic, we’re doing our best to accommodate everyone on Gabriola. Call us on (250) 247-9922.

Please understand that we are not a walk-in clinic. For more information about our services during the pandemic, click here and for emergency care, click here.
