A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Gabriola Medical Clinic

Gabriola Medical Clinic began in 1994. In 2012, we moved into a beautiful, modern, community-built building — the Gabriola Community Health Centre.

The doctors and staff aim to offer the best possible medical care to people on Gabriola Island. We believe the relationship between doctors, patients, and staff to be a partnership, working best when based on mutual trust and respect. We aim to follow this compact, published by the BC General Practice Services Committee, and we encourage you to, too.

We try to provide the best possible care to people who may find it harder to access healthcare services, including people with severe mental health problems, learning difficulties, drug problems, homeless people, those with limited English.

You can find out more about the clinic by checking out our Clinic Achievements page where you’ll find relevant articles and videos relating to the clinic.

We will not tolerate abusive or offensive language or behaviour.

We gratefully acknowledge the Gabriola Health Care Foundation, which owns the Health Centre and generously supported the development of this website.

🤔 There have been A LOT of questions about our next Community Vaccine Clinic at the end of June. Island Health has kindly supplied us with some answers. Everything you need to know on two handy pages! Please read carefully as likely your concerns have been addressed in the attached FAQ. Share widely to make sure your neighbours understand the process.

The short version is that **Everyone** can book a first or second vaccine on Gabriola! There may still be glitches, but the plan should accomodate everyone. 🙌💉❤

Not able to book the June 28th clinic if had first shot at the end of May clinic. Called 833 number twice and not allowed Whole Community Clinic on Gabriola even though 4 weeks has passed. 833 says a minimum of 8 weeks and will be notified for it.

Are there still appointments available for June 28th?

Thank you so much for posting this information 🙂

Here at the clinic we are pretty excited to share confirmed data from the local Medical Health Officer that 76% of Gabriolans over age 12 have had their first vaccination! 😀❤️🙌

🙏Thank you to every member of our community that rolled up your sleeve and made us all safer. We feel deep gratitude for the high vaccination rate and thank all the island organizations and volunteers that made our local vaccine clinic possible.

There is more good news! Bookings for second doses are now available - 8 weeks after first dose! Please register by going to www.GetVaccinated.gov.bc.ca or call 1-833-838-2323 for support.

Island Health’s immunization teams will return to Gabriola Island at the end of June to provide second doses to those that received their vaccine in March. Importantly they will also be doing first doses for those who have not yet been vaccinated including 12-17 year olds. We would love to see the rates of vaccination in our younger population (age 12-49) go up.

Residents who have received notification they are eligible for their second dose are encouraged to book when the next clinics take place on Gabriola this summer (avoid that Ferry if possible, it is already summer level busy!), but people may choose to book earlier into a clinic in Nanaimo if that is their preference.

The vaccine allows us to look forward to a near future full of gatherings and hugs and community celebration. We hope you are feeling optimistic too!

Comment on Facebook Here at the clinic ...

I just phoned and the person told me that they cannot check the Gabriola availability for me unless they cancel the appointment I already booked in Nanaimo. What a ridiculous system! Dates on islandhealth.ca still say TBA for Gabriola.

Just for everyone's information, there are no appointments left in Nanaimo until after the start of July.

Any information for those of us who received our first dose at the May 17 clinic? We have received our notification email but are unable to book an appointment on Gabriola.???

The 2nd vaccine is a doozy. Be prepared. I just got mine

I tried to book into Gabriola but it didn't show up when I did - is it up now?

Great news for the Medical Clinic and for all of Gabriola. We have successfully recruited two doctors to join our team when Dr. Sandell leaves at the end of May.

Welcome to Dr. Ramak Shadmani and Dr. Erin Cusack who will be taking over Dr. Sandell's patients. Once they settle into their new practices, they will also contribute to the general work in the clinic and help downsize the wait list.

Dr. Cusack and Dr. Shadmani have already begun doing phone appointments to meet people in advance of their arrival. They will both start working in person over the coming weeks. More details and a proper Gabriola welcome to follow.

😊**The "doctor" in the photo is not one of our new doctors, just a cute stand-in to make this post even more cheerful! **❤

The Gabriola Island COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for *ALL* adults is on from May 17-20 at the Community Hall. There was a very rotten glitch that made it hard for many of you to book - the system was not recognizing Gabriola as a location. VIHA assures us that this has been fixed and we really hope it did not make anyone give up in frustration. We need to get shots in everyone's arms - and with this clinic we can make that happen by the end of the day on May 20!

You can register at gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated or call 1-833-838-2323. If you have already booked a shot in Nanaimo and want to change to the clinic on Gabriola please call to rebook. If you experience any difficulties tell the agent your postal code and ask to rebook into the "Whole Community Clinic at the Gabriola Community Hall". You can also keep your appointment in town if that works better for you.

We have also been told by the Ministry of Health that the clinic is no longer able to provide TAP forms for travel to Nanaimo for vaccine - if you already have one for a future appointment it may not be honoured. This was not a decision that was made locally so please be understanding.

Our island gets safer with every single jab in the arm of a Gabriolan. Do it for your health and for your community! 🙏❤️

Comment on Facebook The Gabriola Island ...

This is awesome news. Does the clinic need volunteers or drivers? I am getting my 1st shot today in Nanaimo

Does anyone know which one they are providing during the March 17-20th? Pfizer or Moderna?

The TAP is for valid medical reasons...and your medical info is private. So how would Min. of Health/ BC Ferries know why you are traveling to Nanaimo? Especially if so many people had trouble booking for the Gabriola clinic...I realize that the Gabriola Medical Clinic can do nothing about this, but I just thought I'd put that out there.

Thank you.

Shannon more fyi.

Well it has finally happened! Island Health has scheduled COVID-19 vaccine clinics on Gabriola Island starting May 17! 🙏

Go to gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated to register. Now - do it now!!!

At this point in the vaccine rollout about 20% of Gabriola has been vaccinated. We need to get 70-80% of our population vaccinated to reach a safer level of immunity. That should not be difficult - we all know how much Gabriola loves to reach a community goal!

If you are unable to book online you may book by phone by calling 1-833-838-2323.

If you previously booked into a clinic in Nanaimo and want to change your appointment to the Gabriola clinic you can also call to rebook.

Get yourself registered for your vaccination and then encourage those around you to do the same. We have all been in this together for over a year - and we will only get out of it if we all contribute to this common goal. ❤

Comment on Facebook Well it has finally ...

Thank you. For those of us who can take earlier appointments in Nanaimo, are TAP forms available?

I am still unable to book online (info not recognized for some reason) nor by phone today, 17th. Gabriola not showing up on their menu.

Thank you.
