A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY

Gabriola Medical Clinic

Gabriola Medical Clinic began in 1994. In 2012, we moved into a beautiful, modern, community-built building — the Gabriola Community Health Centre.

The doctors and staff aim to offer the best possible medical care to people on Gabriola Island. We believe the relationship between doctors, patients, and staff to be a partnership, working best when based on mutual trust and respect. We aim to follow this compact, published by the BC General Practice Services Committee, and we encourage you to, too.

We try to provide the best possible care to people who may find it harder to access healthcare services, including people with severe mental health problems, learning difficulties, drug problems, homeless people, those with limited English.

You can find out more about the clinic by checking out our Clinic Achievements page where you’ll find relevant articles and videos relating to the clinic.

We will not tolerate abusive or offensive language or behaviour.

We gratefully acknowledge the Gabriola Health Care Foundation, which owns the Health Centre and generously supported the development of this website.

It has been 6 months since we adjusted to providing care in a pandemic. It has not be easy for us, and we know that it has been difficult for many of you too. Every day we are asked "When will you open back up again?". Please remember that we have not shut down our practice for a single day due to COVID-19. However, our cleaning and safety protocols only allow for a limited number of people in our clinic through the day. We must make room for the emergencies, for sick people that need in-person appointments and for COVID-19 swabbing. At this stage we think of the clinic as a place for the ill, not for the well. In the last few weeks there has been a clear increase in frustration by patients who want immediate access. Please be kind and calm. We are doing the best we can to accommodate everyone's needs. We have added more phone lines to try and make sure we can get to all your calls. We have created a website to help you find information without needing to call. Our staff are working so hard to connect us with our patients. Please appreciate the amazing work they do! 🙏Through July and August we had 2663 patient appointments, 48 emergencies, took care of 160 people who are not patients of the clinic and did 40 COVID swabs. It has been busier than previous summers. If you have a chronic medical concern or need a refill on your medication please make your appointment well in advance of when you will need your care. Planning ahead helps us make sure you have what you need, when you need it. As the pandemic continues we are prepared to continue the work we do, and we appreciate your understanding of the challenges. ❤️ ... See MoreSee Less

You are doing an amazing job and being so kind and patient with the truly ill 😷 people who rely you. I cannot say enough how kind you are. ❤️

You lot are amazing! Thank you for caring for our Island.

And we thank you for your deep patience with / our family. Grateful for such great people!!!

You have been so kind and wonderful to me and my husband during these stressful times and his sudden illness ..,We dont know what we would have done without you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts...,

Great people, great service in rough times! Thank you every one!❤️

I wish we could make a line of hugs, kinda like a samba line, that you all could walk through and feel the literal love. Until we can do that, I send my deep gratitude to each of you.

Your doing a great job! So glad we have access to you in emergencies. Keep up the great work 😁

With so much appreciation and love .,thankyou as I know you are there fully for gabriola!!

Thank you for being there through it all, I hope you are able to take some time for yourselves in rotation, it is high intensity work 💕

Our deep appreciation to each one of you at our clinic. You have been and are there for our community and we give you our deepest thanks in this most difficult time.

As a first responder I am aware of the time and energy the doctors and staff also put in after hours and on holidays. We have turned on the helipad lights twice this week alone. Many members of the public are blissfully unaware of how fortunate they are to have a place to be treated during an emergency. Keep up the good work.

We are truly blessed to have the wonderful staff at our clinic💕 Thank you💕💕

As a recent user of your services (sometimes in a state of some distress), I want to say a big THANK YOU for being part of our community and keeping us well. I can only imagine how tough this has been on all of you. Love you all!!

Thank you for your advice today.

Gratitude for all that you are doing for our community.

We are living in interesting times, adapting is more so, our way of life.

So very satisfied with your care ❤️❤️❤️

We are lucky to have you! Sending gratitude. 💗

Keep up the good work. We are so lucky here on Gabriola.💗💗💗

Thank you for all you do!

THANK YOU to all of you!!!!

We appreciate all you do. Thank you.

THANK YOU!

Thank you ❤

April was our first full month providing virtual care. It has been a change in how we work, but because of our amazing staff and patients we were able to rise to the challenge and keep primary care working for Gabriola Island. Thank you for your patience and your ability to change with us.

As we continue to provide virtual care please consider some tips that will make the visit more effective:

1. Confirm which phone you would like us to call (home or cell) and make sure we have correct numbers.
2. Be available during the time you are expecting your call, and understand that if you miss the call your appointment may have to be rebooked. When you call back it is unlikely that you will be able to be connected immediately to your doctor.
3. Please change the settings on your phone to allow blocked numbers to ring through.
4. Check your blood pressure/temperature/weight before the call if that will help when you talk to your doctor.
5. If you have multiple concerns please prioritize and list them at the outset so the doctor can help determine how to best manage the appointment.

On another note many of you are wondering what has been happening behind the doors of our clinic. We are happy to share some numbers to help you understand our workload. In April we had 1299 patient appointments with the doctors (90% by the phone or video conference). We saw 26 emergencies ranging from lacerations to ambulance visits to critical care airlifts. We cared for 93 patients who live here, but are not patients of our clinic. We also did COVID-19 swabs on 22 patients who met criteria for testing.

As we navigate this pandemic over the weeks to come please remember we are all in this together.

We are now entering our 6th week of providing care in the context of a global pandemic. We remain here for you providing virtual and in-person care as needed. Thank you for your willingness to be as flexible as the situation requires. We all really miss seeing your smiling faces. Call the clinic to book a virtual appointment, and remember if you don't have a doctor you can call us too. We will do our best to care for all Gabriolans.

There has been a slowing of some forms of medical care (no one seems too fussed about deferring their pap smear!) and a significant increase in other needs (so many lacerations and minor injuries. Let's all be a little more careful out there!).

We are also acutely aware that many people are struggling with the stress of the pandemic and how isolation has affected your life. Many people have financial, family and childcare challenges that did not exist only weeks ago. Please know everyone on our team is here to support you in whatever way we can.

One big change in the last week is that the criteria for COVID-19 testing now includes people living in rural communities - like Gabriola. If you develop cold, influenza or COVID-19-like symptoms we would like to hear from you so we can determine if a swab is appropriate in your case. We have a limited number of swabs, but are working on increasing our supply. We can also refer patient to the COVID-19 testing site in Nanaimo. If you have symptoms we would also like to monitor how you are doing, even if you are managing well at home.

It is challenging to remain at home after all this time, but based on the curve it seems like we are doing the right thing, and doing the best that we can. Please continue to stay home to save lives. We are all in this together.

The Building

The clinic is grateful to occupy a wonderful building that was built by the community on Gabriola and is operated by the Gabriola Health Care Foundation. The story of how this clinic was built is remarkable. For more information, and for videos telling the clinic’s story, see the Foundation’s website.

Travel Assistance Forms

Travel assistance forms are available for eligible BC residents who need to travel within the province for non-emergency medical specialist services not available within their own community. Please call ahead with the name of the specialist or service and we can have the form ready for you quickly.

For information regarding medical assured loading, please see the BC Ferries news release.

Fees and Charges

The Medical Services Plan of BC (MSP) covers most necessary medical services for BC residents. Please refer to our Fee Schedule here for complete details.

Recruitment

We’re looking for a fourth doctor to join us. For more information, see here, email us at clinic@gabriolamed.ca, or call (250) 247-9922 to speak to Dr. Maciej Mierzewski or any of the doctors. We’d be delighted to tell you more.

We believe there are around 800 patients on Gabriola who are not registered with a GP. We are very concerned about this and are actively trying to recruit a fourth permanent doctor. Our aim is that everyone on the island who wants a GP at our clinic can have one.

During the pandemic, we’re doing our best to accommodate everyone on Gabriola. Call us on (250) 247-9922.

Please understand that we are not a walk-in clinic. For more information about our services during the pandemic, click here and for emergency care, click here.
